Active Release Techniques®

What Is Active Release Technique (A.R.T)?

Active release technique is a patented technique that treats soft tissue injuires affecting the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. These injuries happen when the soft tissue structures are stretched beyond their limits and mircroscopic tears occurs. This starts the inflammation process of healing cycle and end result is scar tissue adhesions which cause the muscle to be tight and bound-up with a higher probability to injure again.

Active Release separates, releases, and stretches the connective tissue adhsions, restores vascular and lymphic circulation, and increases your range of motion, flexibility, and strength. The A.R.T. treatment protocols has over 500 specific moves which allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.

Who Needs Active Release Technique?

A.R.T. benefits numerous individuals with a wide range of conditions which includes carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, knee pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, sciatica, and plantar fasciitis, just to name a few. Most commonly, an injury results from muscle overuse. The mechanism for injury occurs in one of three ways 1) acute/traumatic injury (sprain/strain) 2) an accumulation of small injuries (micro trauma), 3)and lack of oxygen to the soft tissue.

All three types of injury result in the same outcome, muscles fibers bundle up, and adhesions (scar tissue) form. The muscles shorten, lose elasticity, and added strain occurs at the tendinous junction. This ultimately leads to tendonitis. Nerves may become entrapped, ranges of motion are reduced and strength is diminished. The lack of oxygenated blood delays healing. A.R.T. is designed to break this cycle and restore normal soft tissue integrity and function.

We use ART to treat a broad range of soft tissue injuries, including the following:

Achilles tendonitis / Ankle Injuries
Back Pain / Injuries / Sciatica
Carpal tunnel syndrome / Repetitive strain injuries
Foot pain / Injury / Plantar Fascitis / Shin splints
Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis

I came to Dr. Chung for a torn AC joint in my shoulder.  After trying to rest it on my own for over 1 year, I realized the problem was not going to go away without treatment. Dr. Chung performed ART on my shoulder and after just two visits, I am back to normal.  If I had known then, that was all I would have needed, I would have gotten my shoulder treated long ago.  Dr. Chung was very thorough and gave explicit directions on what I could do at home to help too. I loved that I didn’t have to take any medication and wasn’t told to “take it easy.”  I highly recommend this treatment and Dr. Chung.
